Do you know the history of the Cyprus Government Railway? It was begun at the end of the 19th Century and ran until 1953. The whole history of the railway’s planning, organisation and status is closely entwined in the economics, social fabric, politics and history of Cyprus.
Many of the visible remains are North of the Green Line but, if you are interested to trace these, examine evidence in documents of the time and even to find out if Locomotive Number 1 still stands on its plinth in Famagusta, then this new group will interest you. We will also explore the mineral lines of Kalavassos and Zigi.
Meetings: As this is a new group, we need to find out what railway interests there are in the U3A, if you are interested in the Cyprus Government Railway, home visits to share modeling activities or viewing film and video footage, then you may like to share with others of like mind. Please call Jim if you are interested. |
